چکیده

The effects of chronic administration of chloroquine commonly used for prophylaxis or treatment of malaria, rheumatoid arthritis and lupus erythematosis on the inferior colliculus (IC) of adult male and female wistar rats was studied. Seventeen rats of average weight 184g were randomly assigned into treatment (n = 10) and control (n = 7) groups. Rats in the treatment group received 2mg/kg body weight of chloroquine phosphate dissolved in distilled water daily for 14 days. The control rats received equal volume of distilled water daily. The rats were fed with rat pellets purchased from Ladokun Feeds Limited, Ibadan, Nigeria and given water liberally. They were then sacrificed on day fifteen of the experiment. The inferior colliculus was carefully dissected out and quickly fixed in 10% formal saline for histological study. Findings indicate that rat in the treated group showed degenerative changes, vacuolations and reduced cellular population in the inferior colliculus. Chronic administration of chloroquine has adverse effect on the micro-anatomy of the inferior colliculus in rats. Chloroquine may have adverse effects on the auditory sensibilities by affecting the micro-anatomy of the inferior colliculus of the adult wistar rats. We recommended further studies aimed at corroborating these observations. 1Department of Anatomy, School of Basic Medical Sciences, University of Benin, Benin City, Nigeria. Effects of chronic low- dose treatment with cyclophosphamide on the rat testis

Introduction: Cyclophosphamide (CP) is used for the treatment of various cancers. In spite of its therapeutic importance, a wide range of adverse effects such as reproductive toxicity has been observed following the administration of this drug in human and experimental animals. In the current study, we have investigated the adverse effects of CP on morphology and histology of testis rats. M...

The effects of sub-chronic administration of sub-lethal doses of amitraz/xylene on selected reproductive parameters of male Wistar rats

This study investigated the effects of sub-chronic administration of sub-lethal doses of amitraz on some testicular parameters of Albino rats. Twenty-four adult male Albino rats (100 ± 10 g) randomly assigned into four groups were used for the study. Groups A, B and C received 10.0, 2.0 and 0.4 mg/kg amitraz in 10 ml/kg water while group D received equivalent volume of water orally and daily fo...

Histological and Biochemical Alterations in the Superior Colliculus and Lateral Geniculate Nucleus of Juvenile Rats Following Prenatal Exposure to Marijuana Smoke

Prenatal exposure to marijuana has been associated with a variety of brain deficits, as Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), its main active ingredient crosses the placenta and affects foetal brain development. Despite this effect, marijuana remains a commonly abused substance among pregnant women. In the current study, we examined the histological and biochemical changes in the superior colliculus (...
